St.
Louis International Character
Students from all over the world feel at home in St.
Louis. Founded by the French in 1764, it is a city of
great ancestral diversity. Africans, Germans, Irishmen,
Englishmen, and many others have populated the region,
which continues to welcome citizens from many nations.
At local restaurants, St. Louisans enjoy the varied
cuisine of many places—China, India, Lebanon,
Brazil, and France, to name just a few. International
grocery stores offer foods from around the world. The
city also celebrates many festivals featuring the cultures
of other countries. The city's many religious institutions
include Christian churches, Islamic mosques, Jewish
synagogues, and Buddhist organizations.
